The Research Cycle

Oval:
Text Box: QUESTIONING
- emphasise research questions requiring either problem-solving or decision-making
Text Box: PLANNING
-          subsidiary questions;  where the best information lies. What sources are most insightful ? Reliable sources ?
-          How to sort/sift/store findings.
Text Box: REPORTING
- findings presented to a (simulated or real) decision-making audience.

Text Box: EVALUATING
- is more research needed before proceeding ?  May require several repetitions of the cycle.

Text Box: SYNTHESISING
- ‘jigsaw-puzzling’; student teams arrange and rearrange the information fragments till patterns or ‘pictures’ emerge. Synthesis is fuelled by the tension of a powerful research question.

Text Box: SORTING AND SIFTING
- systematic scanning and organising of data; setting aside that which is most likely to lead to insight.

Text Box: GATHERING
- relevant, useful information.  Collecting and recording from sources.  Students structure findings as they go.
