Task

The 2052 Olympics are approaching and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has determined that the Olympics need to be modernised. They are concerned that the Olympic movement might be losing its relevance to modern society, it leaves too much of an ecological footprint, costs are escalating and this is excluding poorer countries. Some sports included in the Olympics are seem too elitist and other more popular sports are not part of the Olympic Games.   The IOC has asked for worldwide submissions to gather ideas in the following areas:

 Location: The IOC is considering 3 options for the location of future Olympic Games;

  • an existing city that has already hosted the Olympics,
  • a purpose built city to be used for all future Olympics
  • a multi city approach, which utilises the best worldwide facilities for each particular sport.

 Create a persuasive text for your chosen option.

 Sports: Create a persuasive text detailing why a particular sport or activity should be included in the Olympic Games.

 Promotion: The Olympic Committee has decided to regulate the way that future cities will promote themselves.  They have determined that cities must have a mascot, a jingle, uniform and emblem. Create an original promotion package for a particular city/country of your choice.  Include at least two elements in your package.  Remember that your promotion package must be persuasive.

Environment:  The IOC has decided to clean up its act.  It has determined that all future games must be environmentally friendly.  Create a persuasive text detailing your ideas for a more environmentally sustainable Olympics.  You might like to consider transport, energy sources, transport, accommodation, catering, etc. Detail at least two ideas that would help “clean up” the games.

 Choose one of the above areas for your project.

 Persuasive texts can be brochures, web sites, TV ads, pod casts etc.  They can include photos, artwork, diagrams, graphs, music, and written text.  Your persuasive text must include written text of at least 200 words.

Use the MOST appropriate technology to publish your text.

As you undertake this task you will be asked to learn and demonstrate some ICT skills. You will also be asked to reflect upon the task, your progress and the final product.

 You can work independently or in groups of up to three.
